It’s that time of year again.
Marketing calendars are being dusted off, budgets are being discussed and someone’s already suggested adding another social media platform to the mix.
But before you copy and paste your 2026 marketing plan into 2027, there’s a question worth asking.
If your business priorities have changed, why hasn’t your marketing plan?
More campaigns, more content and more channels don’t automatically mean better results.
Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is less. Just with a lot more purpose.
Look backwards before you plan forwards
Before filling next year’s calendar, take an honest look at 2026.
What actually worked? Which activities generated genuine enquiries? What helped build your reputation? And what swallowed time and budget without delivering much in return?
Forget vanity metrics for a moment. A thousand likes might look lovely in a report, but they’re not much use if you’re trying to win new business.
Use what you’ve learnt to make better decisions about where to focus next.
A useful starting point is to divide your 2026 marketing activity into three categories: what you’ll keep doing, what you’ll stop doing and what you’ll try differently. It’s a simple exercise, but it can quickly reveal where your time and budget would be better spent.
Start with business goals, not marketing activities
Too many marketing plans start with what businesses want to produce rather than what they need to achieve.
More LinkedIn posts. A new campaign. Perhaps a podcast for good measure.
But what’s the commercial objective?
It’s worth asking whether your marketing has kept pace with your business. Your ambitions might have grown, your customers might have changed and your services might have evolved. But if your marketing is still doing what it did two years ago, there’s a good chance a gap has opened up between where you want to go and what’s helping you get there.
If your priority is winning larger clients, you might need stronger positioning, better case studies and more convincing website messaging.
If it’s generating qualified enquiries, your focus might be improving conversions and supporting your sales team.
Start with the business challenge. Then build the marketing around it.
Build your brand. Generate leads. Do both.
Lead generation matters. Of course it does.
But focusing entirely on immediate enquiries can mean neglecting the brand building that makes customers choose you in the first place.
Strong branding, consistent visibility and useful content build familiarity and trust. Brand building helps people recognise, remember and trust your business, whilst lead generation gives them a reason and a route to take the next step. The strongest marketing strategies recognise the value of both.
Your 2027 marketing strategy needs to balance both of these.
And that means choosing channels based on where your customers actually are, rather than trying to be everywhere.
Make your resources work harder
Most marketing teams don’t have unlimited budgets, endless time or twenty people waiting for something to do.
So prioritisation matters.
One well-planned campaign that supports sales and works across multiple channels could deliver far more value than five disconnected initiatives.
AI can help teams work more efficiently. Internal teams bring business knowledge. And the right agency partner provides additional expertise, fresh thinking and creative capacity when it’s needed.
The trick is knowing where each adds the most value.
Because a brilliant marketing plan means very little if you haven’t got the resources to deliver it.
Make 2027 about progress, not just activity
A good marketing plan isn’t measured by how much you’ve planned to do.
It’s measured by how clearly you know what you’re trying to achieve, where you’re focusing your efforts and whether you’ve got the right people and strategy to deliver it.
So, before you fill another twelve months with marketing activity, ask yourself:
Are we planning to do more, or are we planning to make more of a difference?
